David M. Junkin Jr. MD

David M. Junkin, Jr., MD
Medical School:  Temple University
Residency:  Temple University Hospital
Fellowship:  University of Kentucky

Professional Profile

Dr. Junkin specializes in arthroscopic procedures of the knee and shoulder with a focus on sports medicine. With a lifelong interest in orthopedics, he says he always saw himself as an orthopedic surgeon following in the footsteps of his father, a well-respected orthopedic surgeon himself. Dr. Junkin earned a Master's degree in Medical Sciences from Allegheny University in Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Temple University Hospital. Following his residency training, Dr. Junkin completed the Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky's Albert Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. During his fellowship training, he served as the team physician for three universities in Kentucky, and for the Lexington Horsemen arena football team in 2008.

Technology directed Dr. Junkin into sports medicine. He is fascinated by the arthroscope and procedures that require small or no incisions at all. An arthroscope is a thin flexible fiberoptic scope inserted into the joint through a small incision to perform diagnostic and treatment procedures or repairs. The use of tiny incisions reduces recovery time and minimizes damage to connective tissue.

Dr. Junkin performs the highly specialized anatomic double bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This procedure more closely restores the native anatomy and mechanics of the knee compared to the traditional arthroscopic reconstructive techniques.

Dr. Junkin has authored articles in several journals and a chapter on ACL reconstruction in a professional publication. He has presented lectures on sports medicine and medical therapy for knees. He holds membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is involved in research to evaluate shoulder rehabilitation exercises.

Personal Profile

As a sports physician, Dr. Junkin's aim is to get his patients back to their previous level of performance or their desired level of activity as soon as possible. Patients receive more direct care at a smaller community hospital like Doylestown, says Dr. Junkin. "There's a warmth to it," he says. "The staff of the hospital is nice and I feel comfortable there."

An avid sports fan, he enjoys golf and skiing. Dr. Junkin is a team physician for Delaware Valley College in Doylestown and also works with teams from several local high schools. He enjoys spending time with his family.
